Artist Statement

My work has been about tone for as long as I can recall. That is to say, the through line in all my pieces be it sculptural, functional, or works on paper has been in service of encouraging and nurturing a certain feeling. I have spent a great deal of time trying to articulate and objectively identify the sum and substance of this particular feeling. The closest I have come to a distinction in this is the idea of duende and its association with traditional flamenco music. An aesthetic of tone rather than type. In this way I liken my work closer to that of music, in the absence of sound my goal is the arrangement of form, harmony and dissonance. As a response to this, I have chosen to focus my attention to the manner in which my work is created. The process both physically and mentally, understanding not only my materials but also my intentions and motivations for why I make art in the first place. This centering of heart, head, and hand has become the sole means for which I create.
